How the NPS is worked out
Ask one question: how likely is someone to recommend you, from 0 to 10?
- Sort each answer. A 9 or 10 is a promoter. A 7 or 8 is a passive. A 0 to 6 is a detractor.
- Divide the promoters by all answers. Divide the detractors by all answers. Turn both into percentages.
- Subtract the detractor percentage from the promoter percentage.
Passives count in the total but do not move the score.
A worked example
90 customers answered: 48 promoters, 27 passives and 15 detractors.
- Promoters: 48 of 90 is 53.33%.
- Detractors: 15 of 90 is 16.67%.
- NPS: 53.33 minus 16.67 is 36.67.

How to read your score
The score always sits between -100 and 100.
- Above 0: more promoters than detractors.
- Below 0: more detractors than promoters.
- 100 means every answer was a 9 or 10. -100 means every answer was a 6 or lower.
